Custom UNO-Style Cards: Print Your Own Matching Game Deck

Looking to print your own UNO-style matching game cards? You can — with one caveat: UNO is a Mattel trademark, so you can't legally print decks that use the UNO name, color palette in a clearly-copied way, or the official wordmarks. What you can do (and what we press constantly) is design your own matching-style card game with original art, custom color groups, and your own action cards. This guide walks through the legal side, deck design, sizing, stock, and exact 2026 pricing.

The trademark side, in one paragraph

Mattel owns the UNO trademark and trade dress. Designing a matching game that uses four colors, number cards, and action cards is fine — those mechanics aren't protected. Using the UNO name, the specific UNO logo treatment, or near-identical card backs is not. Most of our customers either build a branded version for their business (real estate teams, weddings, corporate gifts) or launch an original retail product on Kickstarter.

What a matching-style deck actually contains

A classic matching-game deck has 108 cards: four colors (red, yellow, green, blue), each with one 0, two each of 1–9, two each of skip / reverse / draw-two, plus 4 wild cards and 4 wild-draw-fours. You can stretch this — themed wildcards, custom action cards ("swap hands", "draw five"), seasonal variants — without changing the core flow.

We've pressed decks with:

  • 108-card classic count — for indie publishers reskinning the format
  • 120–140 cards — when creators add expansion mechanics or a holiday set
  • 54 cards — for trade-show giveaways where a shorter game is the point

Recommended specs (this is what actually presses well)

  • Card size: bridge (2.25" × 3.5"). Closer to retail matching decks than poker size and easier for kids to fan in a small hand. See our bridge cards product page for the full spec sheet.
  • Stock: 300gsm standard black-core paper (310gsm deluxe is also an option) for the retail feel. Switch to 100% plastic if it's a pool, beach, or kid-friendly product — full breakdown in our card stock guide.
  • Finish: smooth finish prints colors most vividly. Linen air-cushion adds the slip a serious player wants but mutes saturation slightly.
  • Packaging: standard tuck box (full-color CMYK) is included from $1.19/deck at 1,000 qty. A two-piece rigid box upgrades the unboxing for a retail SKU.

Design tips that save reprints

  1. Bleed every color block to the card edge — 0.125" bleed all the way around. Grab a free poker or bridge template so the safe zone and trim line are already drawn in.
  2. Don't put critical art within 0.125" of the trim — cards cut with a small natural variance, and centered designs that just fit will look off on a few cards in every deck.
  3. Use bright, fully-saturated colors — matching games rely on instant color recognition across the table. Pastels and muted palettes slow play and frustrate testers.
  4. Pick distinct symbols, not just distinct colors — about 1 in 12 men have some red-green color blindness. Pair each color with a unique action symbol so players who can't easily distinguish red from green can still play.
  5. Print a back design with rotational symmetry — otherwise players can tell card orientation from across the table.

Frequently asked questions

Can I legally print custom UNO cards?

UNO is a registered trademark of Mattel — you can't sell decks that use the UNO name, branding, or wordmarks. What is fair game is designing your own matching-style card game with original color groups, action cards, and artwork. We've pressed hundreds of these for indie creators, weddings, brand campaigns, and Kickstarter projects.

What's the minimum order for a custom matching game deck?

15 decks. That's the same MOQ we hold across every product, so prototypes and short runs aren't gated behind 500-deck minimums like most overseas printers.

How many cards does a typical UNO-style deck have?

Most matching-style decks land between 108 and 120 cards — usually four colors numbered 0–9 (two of each except 0), plus action cards (skip, reverse, draw-two) and wild cards. We can press any custom count from 24 to 200+ cards per deck.

What card size and stock should I use?

Bridge size (2.25" × 3.5") is closest to retail matching-style decks and feels right in hand for fast play. Standard 300gsm black-core stock holds up to heavy shuffling. For kid-friendly or pool/poolside use, switch to our waterproof 100% plastic stock.

How much do custom matching-style decks cost?

Around $13.49/deck at 25 decks on standard stock, $7.69/deck at 100, $3.89/deck at 500, and $2.79/deck at 1,000. Run the live calculator at /quote for exact pricing on your spec.
