The right card stock for custom playing cards depends on how the deck will be used. For 95% of orders — retail decks, branded giveaways, weddings, game-publisher runs — 310gsm black-core paper with an embossed linen finish is the right answer. For outdoor events, heavy gameplay, or wet environments, 100% plastic wins.
Paper (black-core) — the default
Black-core paper is two printed sides laminated to a thin opaque black layer in the middle. The black core blocks light (cards aren't see-through), and the lamination keeps the deck flat and stable.
- Weight: 310gsm is the standard. Heavier feels stiffer; lighter feels flimsy.
- Feel: Premium. Snaps and bends like a retail deck.
- Durability: Good for normal use. Will eventually wear at the edges with heavy shuffling.
- Best for: Retail decks, gifts, giveaways, weddings, indie game publishers.
100% plastic — built to survive
100% plastic stock with a textured embossed finish.
- Feel: Slightly stiffer than paper. Smooth, slick shuffle.
- Durability: Waterproof, tear-resistant, lasts years of heavy use.

Finishes
Finish is applied on top of the stock and controls the feel in the hand.
- Smooth (no coating) — flat, slightly slick. Cheapest. Good for art decks where texture distracts.
- Embossed linen — woven texture, traps a thin air layer between cards. Cleanest fan and smoothest shuffle. The standard for premium decks.
- Matte — non-reflective. Good for moody art and minimal designs. Slightly slower shuffle than linen.
- Foil / spot UV / embossing — premium decorative finishes, applied to specific areas (backs, indices, logos).
